The Manchester Living Lab is now implementing co-designed interventions to test perceptual traffic calming and aesthetic uplift along the Brunswick Street in Ardwick.

The interventions include the use of large murals and banners on lampposts showcasing community photography and local images from the neighbourhood (see photo above), as well as the greening of front gardens and pavements. The road is also be made a 20mph zone with new signage and welcome signs at either end. We are undertaking before and after surveys with residents and road users, complemented by sensors to monitor traffic. One of these can also be seen on the lamppost in the photo below. By understanding what works and what residents like we will inform other schemes across the neighbourhood and city.
